A Spanish newlywed is fighting for his life after a devastating shark attack off Kooddoo island in the Gaafu Alif Atoll. The victim, identified as 31-year-old Borja, suffered catastrophic injuries when a shark tore flesh from his leg. Surgeons amputated the leg following severe blood loss before airlifting him to Male.

Local reports suggest the attack may be linked to waste disposal issues at a nearby fish processing plant. Sharks in the area typically feed on processing waste, and the disruption may have left them more aggressive.

The incident has prompted calls for stricter regulations around waste disposal near swimming areas. The UK FCDO has updated its travel guidance highlighting safety concerns.
